Hello summer.

Thursday, December 30, 2010

After freezing our tails off in Vienna, Budapest, and especially in Ukraine, sunshine has never felt so good. We weren't planning on venturing into winter weather on this trip, so we didn't pack for cold, let alone snow. Two weeks in the wintery cities was enough to give us coughs and stuffy noses. A flight from icy Ukraine to southeast Asia was quite the shock. Here's a "before and after" just for kicks.

- Julia

before: Kiev, Ukraine // 20 degrees and snowing
after: Bangkok, Thailand // 85 degrees and sticky hot

  7. I was wondering how you'd handle this transition. Did you end up having to purchase an extra suitcase for all your winter clothing?

And I don't know how you manage to fill us in with all of your beautiful photos while doing so much traveling, but I'm very grateful!

  8. Wow! What an amazing difference :o) In Texas, I'm a little bit in between the two extremes... not too hot, not too cold. I love reading about your travels overseas & I wish you two the happiest new year!

  9. Yes, it definitely makes for an adjustment. Every time I leave Iraq and then come back I get sick when I get back because the climates I am in are so different. Ya'll are going to love Thailand. If it's not already in your plans hope a ferry or an hour plan ride to Phuket. It is truly a paradise! Happy New Year

  10. I know what " cold " means in Europe. I felt just the same when traveling from sunny California.
Good choice to be in Thailand...love both outfits of yours, and I prefer "after" mood and summer of Thailand.
    It's a place I wanna visit, someday.
Have a very summer romantic Happy New Year.

    God bless your marriage !
I like you Julia and Yuriy.

  13. Nice contrast. I'm sure I'll be wishing I'm somewhere like Thailand here in the next few weeks as the glow of the holidays wears off and the gray drudgery that is January and February in the Northwest sets in. Can't wait to see pics of sandy beaches and snorkeling!

  14. I meant scuba diving, not snorkeling--which is my version of scuba diving :).

  15. Eva- All we bought during our trip for winter weather was boots, hats, scarves, and gloves--all small things--so they fit into our suitcases. I wanted a warm coat so badly, but definitely did not have room for it. We had pretty crummy clothes for winter but just layered a LOT.

Megan- We are indeed planning on taking a trip to Phuket to do some scuba diving. Thanks for the recommendation.

Curious Constellation- Thank you.. just bought it in Bangkok for less than $10. :)

    Natalia- Hahaha.

  16. Julia & Yuriy - I just now saw that you wrote back to my question. Usually my suitcases are packed to their full capacity when I travel anywhere (even on my 10 day long trip with only a carry-on to Paris, Venice, and Athens) so I'm really surprised. You sure do have a lot of self control when it comes to luggage! Thanks for answering my question! : )
